The Delta Offices

The design philosophy adopted for the new Key Delta premises in Pietermaritzburg is based on “orderly openness with an easy flow from one space to another”, says the architect responsible, Jeremy Hathorn, of FGG Architects.

“The client wanted us to create as much open-plan office space as possible and, where cellular offices and meeting rooms were essential, the transparent feel was to be carried through by introducing floor-to-ceiling glazed panels, combined with Pelican Systems’ Drywall office partitions with fully glazed side panels,” Hathorn explained.

“Customer privacy in the sales cubicles was achieved without compromising the openness of the showroom.
Gridlock suspended ceiling systems were used in combination with the bold bulkheads to define the different functional zones in the open-plan offices. For instance, grey bulkheads combined with square columns at each end, define the sales desk areas in the showroom; while a dropped flush plastered bulkhead defines the customer waiting/coffee area.

“The muted grey paint and wallpaper tones and the natural maple timber enhance the relaxed ambience created by the flowing spaces, whilst subtly helping to define different functional zones formed by the ceiling height changes and bulkheads,” he added.

Gridlock suspended ceiling grids are purpose designed to emit an audible click to confirm connections. The system’s fire expansion punch-outs allow the ceiling grid to expand along a straight line thereby maintaining its shape longer than conventional ceiling grids. Gridlock also features double stitching on the main- and cross-tees for rigidity. The system’s fast and simple dismantling, one-handed assembly and high-speed construction time have been widely praised.

Pelican’s Drywall fully integrate partitioning system is cost-effective and designed to present a smooth, uninterrupted wall surface, ideal for paint or wallpaper. Lightweight construction, speed of erection, low cost, fire resistance, and exceptional sound ratings has won this system wide acceptance throughout the building industry.
